Japan has once again managed to become the world’s most powerful passport in 2022, allowing its citizens visa-free access to 193 countries.
According to the 2022 report
This report is according to the recently released Henley Passport Index’s third quarter 2022 report.
The index calculated by Henley & Partners, a global investment firm that specializes in residency and citizenship, using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
According to the Henley Report
The scoring system of the index developed to give users a reliable and practical overview of the power of their passports. As such, each passport scored on the total number of destinations the holder can reach visa-free.
Visitor’s Permit, Visa or Electronic Travel
The Henley Passport Index is based on a comparison of access rights to 227 travel destinations of 199 different passports, with or without additional visas. Therefore, for each destination where a visa not required, where a visitor’s permit, visa or electronic travel authorization (ETA) on arrival can obtained, a country’s passport earns one point.
To stop the spread of COVID-19
If reports to be believed, the lifting of restrictions on international travel has helped passports regain their strength. To contain the spread of COVID-19, many countries have closed borders, and began gradually opening up after a two-year period in March 2022, easing global travel.
Why is Japan’s passport the most powerful?
According to the latest Henley Passport Index from Henley & Partners, a Japanese passport offers hassle-free entry into 193 countries, which is why it is one of the most powerful in the world.
