The actor had a history of substance abuse and in a 2018 profile with the paper, Mr Bynes said she had been sober for about four years. In interviews, she stated that she started smoking marijuana “when I was 16”. She then moved on to other drugs. In 2013, she had a public breakdown and was placed on a psychiatric hold. Guardianship was awarded to Ms. Baines’ mother, which remained in place for nine years.
