India’s legendary tennis player Leander Paes on Friday joined the Trinamool Congress (TMC). TMC membership given to Leander Paes by Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee herself. During this Mamta Banerjee said that ‘he my younger brother’. Before Leander Paes, actress and former Congress leader Nafisa Ali has also joined TMC today. Nafisa Ali had joined Congress in 2009. She had earlier contested the Lok Sabha elections from Lucknow on an SP ticket.
All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) has informed about tennis star Leander Paes joining TMC on its Twitter handle. TMC tweeted that ‘We are extremely happy to inform that Leander Paes joined us today in the presence of our President Mamata Banerjee! Together we will ensure that everyone in this country sees the dawn of democracy that we have been waiting for since 2014!’ On Leander Paes joining TMC, Mamata Banerjee said that he like my younger brother. Mamta said, I have known him since I was the youth minister and he was very young. Let us inform that, Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has reached Goa on a three-day visit.
Leander Paes is an Indian tennis player who nowadays competes in doubles and mixed doubles events. He is one of the most successful players of India. He has won many championships. Paes won a bronze medal in men’s singles at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. He is the first and only Indian to represent India in Olympics 7 times. Leander Paes awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 1996-1997, India’s highest award in the world of sports, as well as the Padma Shri award in 2009. He awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2014. Leander Paes was born on 17 June 1973 in Kolkata.
Assembly elections to be held in Goa next year
This visit of Mamta Banerjee is considered very important before the assembly elections to be held in Goa next year i.e. 2022. TMC has intensified its election campaign after it decided to field its candidates on all 40 seats in Goa. Over the past few weeks, several posters with a picture of the TMC supremo and the slogan ‘Gonichi Navi Sakal’ (Goa’s new dawn) have been put up across the state.
