Virender Sehwag’s performance as a 33-year-old captain

Virat Kohli’s tenure as the captain of Team India’s T20 International came to an end on Monday. When the team was eliminated in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2021. After India’s disastrous start in the World Cup, there was speculation about Kohli’s future as a captain in the other two formats as well as heavy losses to arch-rivals Pakistan and New Zealand. However, former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag believes that the 33-year-old has been brilliant as a captain.

‘Virat’s record as a captain is splendid’

Sehwag responded by responding to a fan’s query on his official Facebook page. The question of this fan was whether Kohli should resign as captain completely? To this Sehwag said, ‘It is Virat’s decision. But I don’t think he should give up the captaincy of the other two formats.

‘A personal decision whether to give up captaincy in ODIs and Tests’

He further said, ‘He is a good player. He is an aggressive captain and leads from the front. I reiterate that whether or not to step down as captain in ODIs and Tests should be his personal decision. However, the former opener insisted that there is a need to introspect on the team’s poor performance in ICC tournaments.

‘Remember only when you win world tournaments in a row’

Sehwag said, ‘I know that we should support the team in bad times. But it’s been a long time that we haven’t won any major ICC tournament. India should definitely introspect on this. Winning a bilateral series is one thing. But people remember you only when you win the world tournament continuously. Let us tell you that Team India will return to action on November 17, when the team will take on New Zealand in the three-match T20 International series.
