Former India coach Ravi Shastri has hit back at off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s statement. Ashwin had recently said that Kuldeep Yadav got more chances in his place during the 2018-19 series in Australia. The then coach Shastri had described Kuldeep as the number-1 bowler in foreign countries. They were broken after this statement. To this Shastri replied saying that if Ashwin felt bad then it is a good thing. My job is not to put butter on everyone’s toast.
Kuldeep Yadav took five wickets in the Sydney Test on the 2018-19 tour. Ashwin had said that he was really happy for Kuldeep. Because he knew how difficult it was to take five wickets as a spinner in Australia. But Shastri’s remark had left him completely despondent.
My job is to lay out facts without agenda: Shastri
Shastri countered Ashwin’s statement saying, “Ashwin did not play in the Sydney Test match. Kuldeep Yadav bowled well in that match. So it was right for me to give Kuldeep another chance. I am happy if my statement has hurt or offended Ashwin. This inspired him to perform better. My job is not to put butter on everyone’s toast. My job is to lay out facts without any agenda.”
‘Statement has given after seeing Kuldeep’s performance’
Shastri said, “Looking at the way Kuldeep bowled, I told him that he can become India’s No.1 bowler overseas. If it hurts any player, I would say it is a good thing. I am proud that I made that statement. Now Ashwin has put his point on that. It hurt them and they were disappointed. Now he has done a good job. They did something different after my statement.”
