Lungi Ngidi Biography, Stats, and Latest News

Lungisani True-Man Ngidi (born 29 March 1996) is a South African cricketer who plays for the South African national cricket team. He was included by the Northerns cricket team in their squad for the 2015 Africa Twenty20 Cup. He made his Test debut on 13 January 2018 against India.

Lungisani Ngidi, along with Kagiso Rabada, forms the face of South Africa’s potential pace attack. Standing tall at 1.93 meters, Ngidi is capable of bowling at over 140 kph, seaming it either way and keeping the batsmen honest on the back foot with short-pitched deliveries. He is also known for his heavy delivery with an open-chested bowling run-up.

Ngidi made his Test debut against India at Centurion in January 2018, coming on for Dale Steyn, who had injured his heel in the First Test at Newlands in Cape Town. He completed the job with the perfect script, hitting a six in the first over, and impressed everyone with his pace, animosity, and attitude.

Ngidi made his Twenty20 International debut against Sri Lanka at Centurion in January 2017 and was named player of the match for his bowling figures of 2–0–12–2. He was named a part of the One Day International squad to face Sri Lanka later that month. But the latter was ruled out of the series due to a left abdominal muscle strain.

Buoyed by the success in the Test series against India, Ngidi made his ODI debut against the same opposition at Newlands. But he was underwhelming with bowling figures of 0/47 in India’s 124-run victory.

He also missed the 2019 Indian Premier League due to a side strain. Injuries have been part and parcel of Ngidi’s career and his hamstring flare-up resulted in the speedster missing a few matches in the showpiece 2019 World Cup – a tournament forgotten for himself and his team.

He featured in only one season for CSK in the IPL. But made an instant impact in that year (2018) as Men in Yellow. When fit, he is an automatic selection as one of the fast bowlers and will add much-needed firepower to the side. He will have to compete with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood for a spot.
