Alia Bhatt’s performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi has landed her in The Guardian’s greatest film repertoire of all time.

Smiles from ear to ear after coming into the greatest repertoire of all time. The Guardian just released a new list of the greatest and worst film repertoire of all time, selected by its writers. Guardian writer Mike McCahill wrote of Alia’s performance in Gangubai Kathiawadi, “One of the greatest performances of 2022. As the real-life figure of Ganga Harjivandas, the self-improved sex slave who became the queen of Mumbai’s 1960s red-light district, Bhatt has a full emotional grasp of a rollercoaster character arc. Her exceptionally expressive dance in the drum number Dholida tells its own story: from communal celebration to personal desolation, it is a three-minute tableau of what this woman has gained and lost.

Responding to the praise, Alia reposted the article with a smiling face emoji. Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, earned a lot of praise overseas when it released earlier this year. Within a week of its release, Gangubai Kathiawadi had become the number one non-English film on Netflix globally. The film clocked 13.81 million hours in a week and entered the top 10 of films in 25 countries around the world, including Canada, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates.

Amitabh Bachchan also praised Alia for her work in the film. “Alia, you are beyond brilliant in Gangubai. I lack words to express it now! My love as always, Amitabh Bachchan,” read the letter. The film is based on S. Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai and follows the journey of Gangu (played by Alia), who was sold to a brothel in Kamathipura, Mumbai.

Alia was last seen in Brahmastra with husband Ranbir Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan. Her upcoming releases include Hollywood debuts Heart of Stone with Gal Gadot and Jee Le Zara alongside Katrina Kaif and Priyanka Chopra. He also has Rocky and Rani’s love story with Ranveer Singh.
