The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which runs the awards, came under fire ahead of the 79th annual ceremony when it was revealed that the HFPA had zero black people among its 87 members. He was also charged with unethical conduct and questionable financial dealings.
NBC later announced
He will not broadcast the 2022 awards because of the HFPA’s failure to improve its controversial business practices. The ceremony proceeded as a private, unreleased event, with The Power of the Dog taking home the Best Film Drama award, and West Side Story receiving the award for Best Musical or Comedy Film.
NBC said in a statement,
“We believe the HFPA is committed to meaningful improvement.” “However, a change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to get it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes. Assuming that the organization is on its own If the plan executes, we are hopeful that we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023.
Best Actor for 1996’s Jerry Maguire
Worse yet, the former winner, Tom Cruise, returned his three Golden Globes because of the controversy. He previously won Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for 1996’s Jerry Maguire, Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for 1989’s Born the Fourth of July, and Best Supporting Actor for 1999’s Magnolia.
Back with a return to the Golden Globes January 10, 2023
The Golden Globes have been running every year since 1996, except last year. The return of the awards this year is a pivotal moment for the HFPA, which has undergone major reforms since the cancellation of last year’s awards. Members are now banned from accepting gifts and the HFPA has removed a limit on new members. Granted, allowing them to add 21 new members last year to improve diversity. However, even these changes come with some caveats.
The HFPA made enough effort to win over the public.
When the accreditation standards were tightened, no current members were excluded. The organization went ahead with the 2021 awards despite no stars attending or airing in any way that angered many. It remains to be seen whether the HFPA has done enough to win over the masses. But for now, at least the Golden Globes are back. Which stars will attend the ceremony after the turmoil is another question entirely.
